Aleksander Ferdinand is the prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire with nothing but a passing knowledge of the coming war. Deryn Sharp is a girl with sharp air sense disguised as a boy on the crew of the airship Leviathan. As the Austro-Hungarians and German “Clankers” pit their steam-driven machines against the British Darwinist “beasties”, an unlikely alliance forms between Alek and Deryn’s worlds resulting in reluctant trust, danger, and adventure. Despite a slow start, Leviathan is a good recommendation for fantasy and science fiction lovers as well as an introduction to steampunk.
