Bethany's Readers' Advisory

The place to go for readers' advisory on books for children, teens, and adults

Oh, Daddy! by Bob Shea March 5, 2012

A young hippo has to show his dad how to do everything, including how to get dressed, how to get in the car, and how to give big hugs.

This one was very popular in Toddler Time.  I used it for the theme Getting Dressed, but it would work for a number of other themes as well.  I liked how it showed the little hippo doing things by himself.  The illustrations were wonderful.

The Napping House by Audrey Wood January 6, 2012

A story about a cozy bed in the “napping house” in which a snoring granny is sleeping and is joined by a dreaming child and sleepy animals.  Each page repeats the original theme and adds a new character until the end when everyone is jarred awake.

A good repetitive book for toddlers.

Book about movement.  All illustrations are vegetables cut and posed as people, bicycles, trucks, etc.

Very cool illustrations that make vegetables seem fun.

Diary of a Worm by Doreen Cronin

Worm keeps a diary of what he does from day to day including trying to teach spider how to dig, scaring girls on the playground, and doing the hokey pokey at a school dance.

This was a really cute book with many funny observations such as “Three good things about being a worm: 1. I never have to go to the dentist.  2. I never get in trouble for tracking mud through the house. 3. I never have to take a bath.”

Three cows are ready for fun.  Unfortunately for Chicken, that means jumping, dancing, and wiggling on his sofa.  At the end of the story, they find a solution that works for all of them.

Fun book with cute illustrations!  Would be great for Toddler Time.
